The barcelona project began in 2023 during yeonsu lim’s research residency in Barcelona, taking as its starting point christo’s unrealised proposal to wrap the columbus monument. Reinterpreted through a contemporary lens, lim proposed an alternative intervention: wrapping the scale model of the world’s first submarine at the museu marítim de barcelona. The project was postponed due to restoration work.

Coinciding with the centenary of Antoni Tàpies, lim engaged with multiple institutions, developing preparatory sketches and proposals. These experiences prompted a reflection on how large-scale artistic interventions are negotiated within institutional and cultural frameworks, beyond questions of success or failure.

Ultimately, the barcelona project functions as both analysis and proposition. It extends christo’s legacy into the present while questioning the limits and possibilities that define contemporary public art.
